KUKAN: EU FUTURE OF WESTERN BALKANS IS PRIORITY

COLOGNE, Sept 9 (Tanjug) - Eduard Kukan, the chairman of the EP delegation for relations with South-East Europe, has stated that a compromise over the draft resolution on Kosovo-Metohija proves that unity exists within the EU and that the EU future of Western Balkans is recognized as a priority. This is good and constructive news for all the parties involved in the process. It is a proof that the EU can take a uniform stand in respect of complicated issues, such as reaching a compromise in spite of the fact that five EU member states have not recognized Kosovo. On the other hand, this proves that the European future of Western Balkans is seen as a high priority, Kukan stated for the Cologne-based radio Deutsche Welle. Kukan believes that the Serbian government's decision to revise the draft resolution on Kosovo together with Brussels will affect Serbia's EU path. Reaching a compromise between Serbia and the EU should be a solid basis for the opening of a practical dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina, Kukan said.
