Đurić: Serbia continues to build and deepen its sincere friendship with the Republic of Malawi
Minister Đurić underscored that Serbia, relying on its own capacities, continues the tradition of fostering close ties with African nations. He emphasized that Serbia takes particular pride in commemorating 25 May as Africa Day, a reflection of the country’s longstanding and special historical bonds with the African continent. Although a candidate for membership in the European Union, Serbia, he noted, regards its exceptional relations with countries such as Malawi as a comparative advantage.
“Serbia continues to build and deepen sincere friendships with African countries, guided by shared values and mutual respect,” Minister Đurić stated, adding that Serbia will remain a reliable and genuine partner to Malawi and the countries of the region.
He assessed that there is a confirmed readiness to further intensify political dialogue and cooperation, and expressed special appreciation to Malawi for its support of Serbia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, emphasizing that the two countries share similar positions on numerous issues in international relations.
Minister Đurić highlighted the importance of strengthening economic cooperation, particularly in the fields of mining, energy, and agriculture, bearing in mind Malawi’s considerable agricultural potential. He expressed Serbia’s readiness to offer expertise and technical support in the implementation of Malawi 2063, the country’s development strategy aimed at accelerated economic growth and national development.
In the field of education, Minister Đurić announced that Serbia would offer additional scholarships under the “World in Serbia” programme, enabling students from Malawi to pursue studies at Serbian universities and thereby serve as an important bridge between the two nations.
He also welcomed Malawi’s confirmation of participation in Specialised Expo 2027, noting that the event represents a key development project for Serbia and an opportunity to showcase to the world the cultural, tourism, and economic potential of participating countries.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Republic of Malawi, George Thapatula Chaponda, emphasized his country’s strong commitment to further strengthening relations with Serbia, both bilaterally and multilaterally. He stressed the importance of continuous political dialogue and intensified exchanges at the highest and prominent levels, extending an invitation to Minister Marko Đurić to pay an official visit to Malawi.
Speaking about economic cooperation, Minister Chaponda pointed to significant opportunities for deepening collaboration in the areas of agriculture, security, education, tourism, and sports.
He underlined that Malawi’s participation in Specialised Expo 2027 is of significant importance, as it provides a unique opportunity for the country—known as the “Warm Heart of Africa”—to present its culture, creative industries, and tourism potential.
As a concrete outcome of the meeting, an Agreement on Political Consultations between the two ministries was signed, paving the way for further strengthening of ties between the two states.
