The State Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Serbia, Nevena Jovanović, met today with the Representative of the UN Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Office in Belgrade, Dominika Krois.

The discussions placed particular emphasis on the work of the United Nations Mission in Kosovo and Metohija (UNMIK), whose mandate is grounded in the legally binding UN Security Council Resolution 1244 (1999).

Jovanović underlined that Serbia highly values the presence of UNMIK in the Province, stressing the importance of the regular consideration of the UN Secretary-General’s reports on the Mission’s activities at the Security Council sessions. She noted that this represents an essential mechanism for providing information on the political and security situation, the position of the Serbs and other non-Albanian communities, as well as on issues related to the rule of law, human rights, and the protection of cultural and religious heritage.

She emphasized that it is vital to preserve UNMIK’s mandate in its entirety, without any reduction of competencies or budget, in order for the Mission to effectively carry out its tasks in line with Resolution 1244.

Jovanović particularly highlighted the importance of respecting the principle of status neutrality in all activities of the UN system, including the work of the Office of the Development Coordinator in Pristina, as a prerequisite for safeguarding the credibility and effectiveness of the Organization.
