Đurić: A New Stage in the Development of Bilateral Relations between Serbia and Spain
Minister Đurić emphasized that this visit, following President Aleksandar Vučić’s stay in Seville in June this year, has given fresh impetus to Serbian-Spanish cooperation and strengthened Serbia’s position on the Iberian Peninsula and more broadly in Europe.
He underlined that Spain, as one of the key EU member states with 50 million inhabitants, is a country that offers unconditional support to Serbia in safeguarding its territorial integrity and sovereignty, as well as on its path towards European integration—from the opening of negotiation clusters to understanding Serbia’s specific circumstances. He noted that he had exceptionally substantive talks with his Spanish counterpart on bilateral cooperation and that an agreement was reached on the need to elevate economic cooperation to a higher level. According to him, Serbia, as one of the fastest-growing economies in Europe, seeks to connect its companies more closely with Spanish partners, attract investment, and create new jobs.
He added that the two sides also discussed a range of international issues, reaffirming their joint commitment to the UN Charter and international law, as well as their continued mutual support in defending territorial integrity and sovereignty, including within international organizations.
Minister Đurić highlighted that during his visit he also held discussions at the Royal Institute for International and Strategic Studies with members of the intellectual and academic community, as well as with company representatives, including Airbus, who expressed interest in strengthening their presence in the region.
He noted that his visit to the Kingdom of Spain concluded an intensive week of diplomatic activities, which also included his earlier talks in Japan and participation in the Bled Strategic Forum. He underlined that Serbia strives everywhere to present itself as an independent, sovereign nation, building friendships with all, and pursuing a nationally responsible policy of an extended hand.
The Serbian Foreign Minister signed a Memorandum on Cooperation in the Field of Diplomatic Education and underlined that Spain has nearly a millennium-long tradition of diplomatic service. According to him, this agreement will enable young Serbian diplomats to gain further training and exchange experiences in Spain, while Serbia’s Diplomatic Academy will host Spanish colleagues. He stressed that this represents an important step forward for Serbia’s diplomatic service and a further strengthening of overall relations with Spain.
