Đurić: Serbia continues dialogue with the United States and other partners at the United Nations

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Serbia Marko Đurić stated today in New York that there is considerable understanding for Serbia within the new U.S. administration, emphasizing that it is a positive development that regular high-level dialogue and contacts are being maintained, even when difficult issues must be discussed openly.

Minister Đurić noted that he used his visit to New York to hold talks with Michael Waltz, the Permanent Representative of the United States to the United Nations, describing him as one of the most influential figures in American foreign policy and a highly relevant interlocutor for Serbia on issues concerning Kosovo and Metohija, the position of the Serbian people, and the protection of Serbian religious and cultural heritage.

In addition to the energy situation, for which he stressed the need for greater understanding of Serbia’s position, the meeting also addressed the importance of political closeness between the two countries. He pointed out that President Trump enjoys unprecedented popularity in Serbia, being regarded as one of the most respected global leaders among the Serbian people.
“This makes us politically close and calls for deeper cooperation, particularly on such sensitive political issues,” Đurić said.

He assessed that the new U.S. administration demonstrates growing sympathy and openness toward Serbia, underlining that frank dialogue, even on challenging topics, provides a sound foundation for strengthening relations. He placed particular emphasis on the preparation of the forthcoming Serbia–U.S. Strategic Dialogue, which he described as a major step forward in the quality of bilateral relations.

According to the Minister, the meeting also touched upon cooperation in the multilateral sphere, which had not previously been a subject of intensive discussion. He pointed out the potential for mutual support in the international arena, as well as the importance of economic cooperation, reaffirming Serbia’s interest in attracting more U.S. investments and capital inflows, which, he recalled, have revitalized the economies of several Eastern European countries.

“We want to see such capital contributing to Serbia’s development, and we also want the U.S. market to become more open and accessible to Serbian companies,” Đurić underlined.

Reflecting on his bilateral meetings with representatives of other major powers, Minister Đurić highlighted the importance of his conversation with Vasily Nebenzya, President of the UN Security Council and Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the United Nations, who, as he noted, reaffirmed Russia’s steadfast support for Serbia’s territorial integrity and expressed understanding for the situation of the Serbian people in Kosovo and Metohija.

During that discussion, the two also addressed initiatives related to commemorating the victims of the 1990s conflicts, with Đurić pointing to the persistent tendency to treat Serbian victims in an unjust and one-sided manner.

Minister Đurić concluded that it is highly significant that the Serbian delegation held direct and substantive talks with representatives of two major powers. He added that China’s support remains of exceptional importance for Serbia, and that it is encouraging to see France’s support for the UNMIK report and its continued work.
