The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Serbia, Marko Đurić, met today in Belgrade with diplomatic representatives of Greece, Cyprus, Romania, Slovakia, and Spain to inform them of the latest action by the provisional authorities in Priština, who unjustifiably arrested Igor Popović, Assistant to the Chief Negotiator in the dialogue and an official of the Republic of Serbia, for remarks he made during a commemoration for Serbian victims in Orahovac.

Minister Đurić expressed his gratitude to Greek Ambassador Maria Levanti, Cypriot Ambassador Andreas Photiou, Romanian Ambassador Silvia Davidoiu, Chargé d’Affaires of the Slovak Embassy Katarína Konsvalová, and Spanish Embassy Representative Tamara García Alas for their respect for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Serbia, and for their principled policy of upholding international law and the UN Charter. He briefed them on the events leading up to the arrest of Popović.

He informed them of the current conditions under which Popović is being held and conveyed Serbia’s deep concern over the potential consequences this situation may have for relations between Belgrade and Priština, given that a member of the Government of Serbia’s negotiation team has been detained.

Minister Đurić emphasized that this arrest constitutes an act of political persecution and a violation of freedom of expression, representing a continuation of a pattern of repression. He added that it also sends a powerful message of intimidation to the Serbian population, whose representative has now been detained.

The head of Serbian diplomacy underscored that Serbia remains committed to dialogue, but stressed that such actions by Priština contribute to destabilization on the ground and endanger the overall security situation in the region at a time when maintaining stability is of critical importance.

He called on the international community to react and put a stop to the irresponsible policies of Albin Kurti’s administration, which aim to bring about the final expulsion of Serbs from Kosovo and Metohija.

Minister Đurić concluded by emphasizing the need for concrete action and even greater support for the Serbian population in Kosovo and Metohija.
