As part of his official visit to the Kingdom of Spain, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Marko Đurić, met today with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares Bueno.

“We see Spain as one of our key friends and partners in Europe, and we would like this to be reflected in all areas of our cooperation. We are ready to explore the fields in which we can further advance our relations,” Minister Đurić emphasized. The interlocutors agreed that the friendly ties between the two countries are characterized by sincere and unequivocal mutual support on issues of vital national interest to both sides.

Minister Đurić called for strengthening cooperation through the intensification of political dialogue. He added that a visit by King Felipe VI to Belgrade would be a fitting way to mark two important anniversaries that Serbia and Spain will celebrate in the coming two years: 110 years of diplomatic relations and 50 years since the opening of embassies at the ambassadorial level in Belgrade and Madrid.

The Serbian Foreign Minister expressed his deep appreciation for Spain’s respect for international law and its principled position regarding the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Serbia. He voiced his confidence that Serbia will continue to count on such support in the future.

Minister Đurić informed his counterpart of the latest pressures exerted by the authorities in Priština on the Serbian population in Kosovo and Metohija. He explained that Serbia is facing the most challenging situation on this issue to date, through no fault of its own, underlining that innovative ideas and frameworks for continuing the dialogue with Priština should be considered. He stressed that, above all, it is essential to ensure the safety of the Serbian population and to implement measures that will secure their survival in Kosovo and Metohija, appealing to Brussels to exert additional pressure on the authorities in Priština to abandon unilateral actions and policies of intimidation.

Speaking of EU membership as Serbia’s strategic choice and a priority of its foreign policy, Minister Đurić highlighted Spain as an important partner in the European integration process, both politically and technically. He underlined the good cooperation with Spain in international organizations and expressed hope that Serbia’s efforts and reform results will be duly recognized.

On economic relations, Minister Đurić noted that they have intensified in recent years, adding that there are genuine opportunities to enhance cooperation in the fields of transport infrastructure, energy and renewable energy sources, as well as Serbia’s interest in greater Spanish investment.

He welcomed Spain’s confirmation of its participation in Expo 2027 in Belgrade, underlining that the event would offer both guests and hosts a unique opportunity to showcase not only their culture and traditions, but also their economic potential.

On the occasion of today’s meeting, Minister Đurić and the Spanish Foreign Minister signed a Memorandum of Understanding between the Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Serbia and the Diplomatic School of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation of the Kingdom of Spain. Both sides expressed their agreement that the document will contribute to strengthening ties between the two diplomatic services and foster the implementation of concrete activities in the field of diplomatic education and training.
